About Therapy

Appointments take place on Thursday afternoons and Fridays in-person at Dr. Beuerlein's office on Dickson Avenue in Kelowna, or by videoconferencing using the Jane app. Sessions are 50-minutes long.

Dr. Beuerlein is a generalist, meaning that her formal training has covered many presenting concerns, ages, populations, and settings. To help you determine fit, she has a strong background in relation to anxiety and anxiety disorders (e.g., GAD), low mood and MDD, stress and overwhelm, life transitions, and management of related concerns (e.g., sleep problems, unhealthy coping patterns, low self-esteem, and self-acceptance). Her practice is an inclusive space for individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions.

At this time, she is not accepting clients for treatment of PTSD, OCD, or eating disorders. Her practice is also not a good fit for those needing intensive treatment (e.g., at a high risk for hospitalization) as she does not have the capacity to offer emergency support or after-hours contact.

Therapeutic Approach

clinical orientation is a therapist's approach to understanding and treating psychological issues, which guides the methods and techniques used in session. Dr. Beuerlein is an integrated therapist, meaning she combines techniques and concepts from multiple therapeutic approaches to best meets the client’s needs.

At the heart of her practice is a person-centered approach, which is based on empathy, genuineness, unconditional positive regard, and emphasizes a positive therapeutic relationship to help clients achieve self-awareness. She believes everyone has the potential for personal growth and clients are capable of being their own agents of change.

Dr. Beuerlein also relies on techniques that have been shown by research to be highly effective, and is heavily informed by her background in psychological research. She largely works from a cognitive-behavioural approach, but will integrate related modalities depending on the client.  You may be introduced to skills or strategies from the following:

04

01

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT upholds that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are all connected. This approach teaches skills to help identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors that are contributing to emotional distress.

02

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT combines mindfulness with behavioural change to improve psychological flexibility. It can help “make room” for difficult thoughts and feelings, connect with the present, and  live life according to our personal values.

03

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Unified Protocol

DBT skills are used to help individuals live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with distress, regulate emotions, and improve relationships. DBT skills are often useful for experiences of very intense emotions.

The UP is an emotion-focused approach that focuses on common characteristics underlying emotion-based disorders such as depression and anxiety. It is designed to help us understand and respond effectively to uncomfortable emotions.

Common questions

How long is therapy?

Effective treatment depends on your specific concerns, level of participation, and the clinician-client relationship among other factors. Therapy typically continues until such time you feel your goals have been achieved, however, Dr. Beuerlein will also discuss openly with you if she feels you would benefit from a different referral, or if she feels you are ready to transition out of therapy.

How often should I come?

The frequency of your sessions depends on what you would like to address, but also your available resources to invest. You can control the frequency of your sessions by booking through Jane and you can book up to 2 months in advance.

What happens in my first session?

Typically, during your first session (or two), Dr. Beuerlein will take time to learn more about you, your concerns, and your goal. By the end of the intake, she will provide initial impressions, suggest potential treatment approaches, and (if time permits) may also offer a brief intervention. It is always your choice to continue.
