Dr. Katherine Beuerlein (née Rose)
R. Psych (CHCPBC #2946)

Hi, I'm Katherine (she/her) and I'm glad you're here. I am a registered psychologist in the province of BC. At this time, I offer therapy to individuals 19 and order, virtually and in person. I invite you to explore my page to determine if we may be a good fit.

My formal training has focused on emotion-based concerns, including treatment and/or management of anxiety disorders, depression, stress, and trouble adjusting to difficult life events. That said, I have a special interest in supporting those whose present difficulties are underpinned by perfectionism, shame, self-criticism, or self-stigma. I believe that our inner critics can hold us back from reaching our full potential and living in line with our values. For that reason, I particularly enjoy working with individuals who are feeling burnt out from trying to "do it all" (e.g., balancing career, responsibilities, relationships, education), who are at a crossroads in life (e.g., relationship dissolution), and/or who are ready to prioritize mental health but aren't sure where to start. In my practice, I emphasize self-exploration to help clients unearth unhelpful patterns and identify the changes they'd like to enact for their wellbeing, with self-compassion. It is my hope that by the end of our time together, my clients feel validated, hopeful, and empowered.

Practice Philosophy

It is my belief that every client is unique, multi-faceted, and ultimately the expert on themselves. For that reason, I see it as important to understand my clients holistically, and the many components of the human experience (e.g., early influences, physical health, relationships, thoughts, emotions, behaviours) that converge to affect our overall well-being. This in turn, can also promote self-exploration and help clients and I better understand what has not been working or getting in the way of meaningful living.

I provide treatment through a person-centred or humanistic lens, meaning that genuineness, empathy, and non-judgment are at the core of my practice. I invite my clients to show up as their authentic selves. You are likely to find my approach to be non-directive, meaning that we'll have ongoing discussions about your goals, collaboratively decide what happens in therapy, and adapt to your needs or preferences (e.g., communicating about what works or doesn't work). I welcome honest conversations about if I am a good fit for you, and I am always happy to make a referral to meet your needs.

Education and Training

Born and raised in Atlantic Canada, Dr. Beuerlein completed her B.A. in Psychology (Hons) from Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland. She relocated to Kelowna, BC where she completed her Masters in Psychological Science (a research-oriented foundation) and her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of British Columbia, Okanagan (UBC-O). Dr. Beuerlein's research speciality lies at the intersection between psychology and law. Her doctoral research centred on Canadian police interviewing practices with suspects of major crime, with an emphasis on rapport building techniques. This work has informed her understanding of rapport as 'not one size fits all' within a therapeutic context. She had the pleasure of teaching at UBC-O from 2018-2023, offering a novel course centred on technology and its relationship with human development, behaviours, and emotions.

Clinically, Dr. Beuerlein is trained as a generalist, meaning she has acquired both depth and breadth of training across ages, settings, and presenting problems. She completed her psychology residency within Horizon Health New Brunswick where she continued her training with both child/youth and adult populations in both assessment and treatment. There, she practiced at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital (acute adult inpatient psychiatry), the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation (neuropsychological assessment), and Child and Youth Addictions and Mental Health Services. Dr. Beuerlein is WPATH (World Professional Association of Transgender Health) trained and is committed to providing affirming care for clients who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.
